(Open up with playing with toys)
And Saul said to him, “Whose son are you, young man?” And David answered, “I am the son of your servant Jesse the Bethlehemite.”
Setting the Scene (1 Samuel 17:1-3):
The Philistines and Israelites prepare for battle in the Valley of Elah. The Philistines occupy one hill, the Israelites another, with the valley between them.
Goliath's Challenge (1 Samuel 17:4-11):
Goliath, a giant Philistine warrior, stands over 9 feet tall (or possibly 6 feet 9 inches based on some manuscripts).
He challenges the Israelites to single combat, mocking them and their God.
Goliath's challenge terrifies the Israelite soldiers.
David's Arrival (1 Samuel 17:12-23):
David, a young shepherd, is sent by his father Jesse to bring food to his older brothers in the Israelite army.
David arrives at the camp and hears Goliath's taunts.
And David said to the men who stood by him, “What shall be done for the man who kills this Philistine and takes away the reproach from Israel? For who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God?”
Purpose will cause you to stand up for the people you are anointed to serve!
The doors that are opening for this church and our organization is because of Giants (Systems) That causes opposition we are willing to stand up against!
Anointed people can’t see back and watch “God’s people” people mistreated and mocked.
Change your perspective
So God created man in his own image,
in the image of God he created him;
male and female he created them.
We were all created with inherent dignity
A Testimony (Melissa - Full Circle)
I can’t stand back and see people:
Discriminated
Bullied
Harassed
Exploited
Oppressed
Marginalized
Neglected
Scapegoated
Excluded
Silenced
Dehumanized
One sign that you will know that you are anointed for the assignment…
You will have opposition from people who are the closes to you!
Now Eliab his eldest brother heard when he spoke to the men. And Eliab’s anger was kindled against David, and he said, “Why have you come down? And with whom have you left those few sheep in the wilderness? I know your presumption and the evil of your heart, for you have come down to see the battle.”
It seems like your family knows how to hit low….
“With whom have you left those few sheep in the wilderness?”
Don’t trip… Jesus went through the same thing…
So his brothers said to him, “Leave here and go to Judea, that your disciples also may see the works you are doing. For no one works in secret if he seeks to be known openly. If you do these things, show yourself to the world.” For not even his brothers believed in him.
How do you get over family opposition?
And David said, “What have I done now? Was it not but a word?” And he turned away from him toward another, and spoke in the same way, and the people answered him again as before.
You have to learn how to pivot and turn from the negativity…
Anointed people know how to turn away…
You have to learn how to turn away from “Them”
I don’t have time to stay stuck engaging in foolishness!!!
David Volunteers (1 Samuel 17:24-37):
David is outraged by Goliath's defiance of Israel and their God.
He volunteers to fight Goliath, despite his youth.
David wanted Saul to know that I have been preparing for this!
What people has tried to downplay.. God has used it to be your training ground
But David said to Saul, “Your servant used to keep sheep for his father. And when there came a lion, or a bear, and took a lamb from the flock, I went after him and struck him and delivered it out of his mouth. And if he arose against me, I caught him by his beard and struck him and killed him.
Wow!
You have to tell yourself… “I am prepared/equipped to take down the Giant”
Your servant has struck down both lions and bears, and this uncircumcised Philistine shall be like one of them, for he has defied the armies of the living God.” And David said, “The Lord who delivered me from the paw of the lion and from the paw of the bear will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine.” And Saul said to David, “Go, and the Lord be with you!”
This reason I can take down the {“Giant/The System”) is because I know who is with me….
Preparation for Battle (1 Samuel 17:38-40):
Saul tries to equip David with his own armor.
David said I haven’t tested this equipment!
Then he took his staff in his hand and chose five smooth stones from the brook and put them in his shepherd’s pouch. His sling was in his hand, and he approached the Philistine.
What you need you have it in your hand…
God told Moses…
The Lord said to him, “What is that in your hand?” He said, “A staff.”
And David put his hand in his bag and took out a stone and slung it and struck the Philistine on his forehead. The stone sank into his forehead, and he fell on his face to the ground.
And David took the head of the Philistine and brought it to Jerusalem, but he put his armor in his tent.
As soon as Saul saw David go out against the Philistine, he said to Abner, the commander of the army, “Abner, whose son is this youth?” And Abner said, “As your soul lives, O king, I do not know.” And the king said, “Inquire whose son the boy is.” And as soon as David returned from the striking down of the Philistine, Abner took him, and brought him before Saul with the head of the Philistine in his hand. And Saul said to him, “Whose son are you, young man?” And David answered, “I am the son of your servant Jesse the Bethlehemite.”
Saul didn’t understand…. It was in His Blood…
Saul didn’t know who his daddy was….
and Salmon the father of Boaz by Rahab, and Boaz the father of Obed by Ruth, and Obed the father of Jesse,
The faith that was in david was in his great great grandmother!
What’s in me I get it from my Daddy…
And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba! Father!”
My father has given me the ability to destroy the Giant!
